Public Domain — the new Java Drama

Poster for Public Domain at Santa Monica High School

Readers of this blog know I’ve been supportive of the theater program at Santa Monica High School. And you might remember posters for something called “Java Drama” — a night of theater, music, dance, poetry and caffeine — put on by students. It was a highly entertaining showcase for the many, many talented performers, writers and directors at Samohi. The good news is, the concept is back, but with a new name.

Public Domain opens Friday, June 1, with two completely different shows, each happening twice for a total of four performances.  Supported in part by Coffee Bean International with a generous donation of their delicious fresh-roasted java, the kids will be doing excerpts from Edward Albee’s “The Zoo Story“,  Joss Whedon (and family)’s “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog“, Sara Ruhl’s “Dead Man’s Cell Phone” and many, many more.

For this coffee-house atmosphere I thought about the messy inspiration of beat poetry with a touch of San Francisco’s Purple Onion, and came up with this. If you’re in town, see you there!
